FSWP participation

Waste Management was raised on the agenda of the water community gathering during the World water forum. It is evidence for all that urgent waste management action is needed to protect water quality (as well as soil and air quality). The problem is HOW. Waste from domestic and local economic activities has to be managed by local authorities, who can best tailor to the system to their own context. But these local authorities need to be supported by broader frameworks, mechanisms or actions by the provincial, national and international levels. Our key messages during the Forum provide some insights on 5 support mechanisms needed for municipal waste management.

Sound waste management relies on :

  1. Public policies & enforcement ;
  2. Funding Mechanisms ;
  3. Integrated spatial & strategic planning ;
  4. Training & research ;
  5. Education & communication.
