The waste and resources community must come together under a shared vision
The Context
The 2030 sustainable development goals were established in 2016, following a consultation period that lasted a few years. Though the issues of pollution and sustainable production are integrated in the framework, waste management as such is only considered under a few indicators: one in SDG 11 on collection rates by cities, and the others on food loss, hazardous waste and recycling rates. The current SDG framework covers the issues of pollution and the topic of resource efficiency, without making a clear link to waste management.
Environmentally Sound Management (ESM) of waste, though a corner stone of sustainable development was not integrated at the time. The Basel Convention defines ESM of waste and provides guidance on technical measures that are ESM compliant. Its full implementation is a key tool to achieve health and environmental protection.
Reflections are starting at UN level on the future framework to be adopted beyond 2030. The development of strong joint key messages by the waste and resources community needs to start now!
The Initiative
The waste and resources community needs to come together early enough to be able to develop a shared vision and efficiently advocate for it when the “beyond-2030" sustainable development framework is elaborated by the international community. This is key to impactfully shape future international frameworks and agreements.
This initiative is called the “Global Push”, and was started under the leadership of FSWP, in partnership with UN-Habitat, UNEP, the BRS-Secretariat and ISWA.
The document for review:
The first strawman of the key messages that could be jointly carried to the UN bodies reflecting on the future of the SDG framework was developed in the last few weeks and is opened for consultation of the wider waste and resources community as of its Launch on 7 May (presentation is available here) at the Basel Rotterdam and Stockholm COPs “Global Push” side-event.
Help shape the shared vision!

Participate in the construction of messages to feed the reflections on the “Beyond-2030" SDG framework. This process will be iterative over the coming months and years.
The first draft of key messages is structured in three parts. The first two are anchored in the existing SDG framework, while the last part proposes a reflection on support mechanisms for the implementation of waste management
