To tackle plastic pollution on an international scale, the Fifth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) adopted a landmark resolution in March 2022 to negotiate a global treaty to tackle plastic pollution by the end of 2024. The treaty is intended to be legally binding and based on a global approach covering the entire life cycle of plastics.

This 4th committee meeting was the penultimate session of the negotiation process, which will be followed by INC5 from November 25 to December 1 in Busan, with the aim of achieving a global treaty by the end of 2024.

FSWP contribution

Many international players are very active in integrating the issue of reducing the volume of plastic waste produced and their recyclability into the treaty, which are part of the FSWP messages conveyed at the INC2 side event in Paris.

On the other hand, the subject of proper waste management to prevent leakage into the environment needs to be reinforced. Although we can reduce the production and use of plastics, waste will continue to be generated, requiring proper management so that it doesn’t end up in the environment. The FSWP took the lead on an ISWA working group to produce a technical note on the topic of support mechanisms for the implementation of effective municipal waste management systems adapted to national and local conditions. . You can read this note here.

The technical note Executive summary is available here. It is intended to feed the discussions on an annex to the Treaty on sound solid waste management. It is the result of contributions from FSWP members through the Territorial Governance working group and from ISWA members around the world.
